Idea #1: What's in the wooden trunk?
I was at a bit of a crucial point in my new book when I came up with an idea for a blog post. You can help me with my book by suggesting random details that I am having a bit of trouble nailing down without knowing anything about the situation the details are occurring in. Hence the ideas without context.
Idea #1: What's in the wooden trunk?

SO, went to my first GenCon this year, and it totally blew my little geek mind! But I'm getting ahead of myself a bit. I knew that this was going to be a big convention and a big opportunity for me, I mean 40,000 geeks all in one place! We purchased our badges, and I made up a spreadsheet of all the seminars and workshops I planned on attending. I was totally prepared!...until about Wednesday when I was running around with my hair on fire and not even packed yet. Well, 5a.m. on Thursday morning when we are leaving for the Con I print out the piece that I wanted to bring for the quick critique section. Two hours into the car ride, I realize it is missing a page! I have no flash drive or laptop, but decided that I would maybe be able to print it off from online somehow once we get to the Con. We got to the Con and I realized that I had unintentionally brought the box of my books instead of the box of my flyers for the media table. I freaked out, but then decided that I could find a Kinko's and maybe make copies of the few flyers that Scott happened to have. So we get there and I walked a mile to the Kinko's (missing my first seminar) and started the process of making copies. While the copy guy is futzing, I read over some of the official information included in my registration packet. It informed me that there is strictly no flyering or promotion of any kind allowed at GenCon. What!? This MUST mean EXCEPT for at the official media table. So I stopped the copy guy, walked all the way back and asked where the official media table was located. NOPE! No media table. Sigh. I think that it would have been nice for GenCon to have spelled that out to people better on the website, but oh well, at least it didn't matter that I forgot the flyers now!!! Blargh! The rest of GenCon was mainly amazing and fantastic, but I definitely needed to leave myself more time for the fun and GAMES! I got great info in the writing seminars, but feel like I missed out on the Con as a whole. So my advice, even if the seminars are amazing, leave yourself at least one entire free day, to tool around the dealer's room, play some random board games with strangers, and just enjoy. :) Also, Con Pizza does not qualify as real food |
If you give me your e-mail, I'll send you a monthly newsletter. Or bimonthly...we'll see.

AuthorMy name is Jen Haeger and I have a degree in Veterinary Medicine as well as a Master's in Forensic Science, so I decided to forget all that and write novels. I used to read quite a bit as a youth, but was not introduced to truly spectacular writing until my husband showed me the works of Jim Butcher, Neil Gaiman, Philip Pullman, and others. We are both enormous dorks and enjoy Science Fiction, Fantasy, Board Games, and RPGs, but also try to get out backpacking every once in a while (much easier to do when we lived in New Zealand). Cheers! Archives
