Not Good News

I often try to make this blog as inspirational to writers as possible, so I apologize for this post in advance. I just found out that my publisher has had to shut down. In one minute I went from published author to self-published author. In one minute I went from receiving royalties, to having to go through the hassle and pain of submitting a novel to publishers again. In one minute I went from having four novels out to having one novel out.

However, don't mistake this rant. I'm not mad at my publisher. This is what needs to happen for them and I support them completely in what had to be an extremely difficult decision. I'm just incredibly bummed out, particularly because this comes less than two weeks from Penguicon where I typically promote my books.

While it is true that I now have the opportunity to perhaps find a larger publisher for my books, I also will have to go for an unknown amount of time with three of my books being unavailable for purchase except for at the Barnes and Noble in Brighton Michigan which still have copies in the store for sale. Thank you B & N Brighton!

Hopefully my next post will have some better news on this front.

So the writing advice given most often is write every day, and I'm not saying that you shouldn't do this. All I'm saying is sometimes this just isn't happening. So instead of beating yourself up about it, I say instead do something of value for your writing every day. Whether it's research, editing, brainstorming, writing your blog post ;), submitting, watching a YouTube video about writing, reading about becoming a better writer, etc., there is always something you can do to further your writing, even if it isn't writing. Okay, now I've said that, try very hard to actually write as many days as possible. The longer you go without putting a single word on the page, the harder it is to get back into the habit. Just don't beat yourself up about it. :)

My name is Jen Haeger and I have a degree in Veterinary Medicine as well as a Master's in Forensic Science, so I decided to forget all that and write  novels. I used to read quite a bit as a youth, but was not introduced to truly spectacular writing until my husband showed me the works of Jim Butcher, Neil Gaiman, Philip Pullman, and others. We are both enormous dorks and enjoy Science Fiction, Fantasy, Board Games, and RPGs, but also try to get out backpacking every once in a while (much easier to do when we lived in New Zealand). Cheers!
